Using Alex Dang's What kind of Asian are you? as inspiration, Year 9-2 created poems discussing their individual identity and how they have been stereotyped. The use of repetition and questioning structure emulate Dang's work and could make for an interesting performance. Each poem includes at least five types of poetic devices we have studied over the last two weeks. Can you identify them in your peers' work?
Wow! great poems guys!
I love how you have used a range f poetic devices. I was lucky enough to see Alex Dang perform live in China a couple of years back and I feel your poems really encapsulate his style; I can feel your emotions running throughout the poems. Really important subject matter you are dealing with here. Thank you for sharing your amazing work :)
Mr Luke
What kind of person are you?
So they said to me: what kind of person are you?
And I said them: I’m a homo sapien that can get the flu
You and I aren’t so different.
Said Green Goblin to Spiderman.
But it is still relevant
At the end of the day, we’re still humans
The only intelligent life from Earth
And if we keep fighting,
Extinction will be as easy as birth
To develop, we shall bring peace
and we shall colonize all the galaxies.
You might think I’m crazy-
Because I’m a 13 year old who is thinking way too far into the future
You might think I’m crazy-
Because you’re the FBI
You might think I’m crazy-
What kind of Indian are you?
So they said to me, ‘What kind of Indian are you?’
And then I said, ‘Well let me tell you’
Let me tell you everything you want to know about my culture.
Let me tell you about how we were looked down upon, to a point where we weren’t considered as humans
Let me tell you how Indian parents try to educate their kin, themselves not knowing how to write
Let me tell you how our ancestors got stripped of everything, to the point where we had to fight for salt
And I still,
Feel the pride of being part of a nation,
Who rose from the ashes like a phoenix
And I still,
“Tell me more about yourself.”
So, they said to me, "tell me more about yourself."
Like they really care.
Because the way we are treated,
does not make sense.
It apparently matters to everyone what race you belong to,
how old you are, or if to this world you are new.
Why so much hate lives among us,
no one has a clue.
Let me tell you about the kids as young as ever,
feeling inferior to one another,
or getting less love and attention,
than what received by her older brother.
Let me tell you about the teenagers,
who are supposed to be mature,
relentlessly under stress.
Always being treated like kids,
however, expected to be level best.
So they said to me: ‘What kind of Human are you?’
Well let me tell you.
Let me tell you everything you want to know about my personality,
Let me tell you about my race, religion and culture,
Let me tell you that my inner animal is a vulture,
Let me tell you that my favorite vegetables are carrots,
And me tell you that my prodigious pets are parrots.
Let me tell you the struggle of not having your Parents satisfied,
So let me tell you about my academic achievements,
Let me tell you my struggle against bullies and creating appeasements,
And let me tell you about my hobbies and lifestyle,
So now you know what kind of a human…
